Hawgin’ With the Heisman

Colorado Buffalo Heisman Trophy Winner Travis Hunter with a trophy largemouth bass

On Saturday night, with an entourage that included both angler Deion Sanders and likely non-angler Lil Wayne, Colorado’s Travis Hunter claimed the 2024 Heisman Trophy. In doing so, he became the first two-way player to win it since Charles Woodson in 1997 and first Buffalo to win it since Rashaan Salaam.

While I haven’t done a deep dive into the matter, as far as I know he also became the first winner to mention fishing in his acceptance speech when he said: “Coach Prime, I’m going to whip you on that lake tomorrow.”

That may not have been hyperbole, as Sanders recently said the following:

"I got a perfect trip after the season. We're gonna start in Texas. We're gonna hook the boat to the back of the big truck. And we're gonna start in Texas, we're gonna go through Texas.... a whole video team on the bus behind us. We're gonna go through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and we gonna use social media and we're gonna stop at every good private lake on the way and we're gonna go through Florida. We're gonna have like five good days worth of straight fishing,"

Indeed, fishing has been a big part of what has been compared to a father/son relationship as well as a coach/player arrangement between the two:

Hunter even had an NIL deal with WaterLand Fishing Optics.

If you’d rather watch open water fishing than video of Hunter eluding open field tackles, he’s got plenty of fishing content on his YouTube channel:
