Marc Shoenfelt – Half Past First Cast Bringing Friendships Back Together

Pennsylvania angler Marc Shoenfelt fishing at Lake El Salto Mexico

Pete and I met Pennsylvania angler Marc Shoenfelt in 2010 at Mexico’s Lake Mateos. We kept in touch, as we live just a few hours away and fish the same bodies of water (including El Salto and Picachos, but never at the same time), but we never got together again until our most recent trip to Lake El Salto. That’s when Marc traveled on his first, but not his last, HPFC traveling adventure. After thirteen years of waiting, Marc finally got the opportunity to fish with “the infamous pescado writer Pete Robbins.”

While Pete fished with Marc and his guide Eduardo, I fished with Marc’s partner, Paul Fisler. I was his lucky charm as he caught his personal best 10.44 pound bass. That is an entire other blog – stay tuned.

Pete and Marc are in the same age bracket, share a similar sense of humor, and I am not so sure who loves fishing more.

Their partnership started out strong, Pete a left and Marc a righty, made it so much easier to both stand on the front deck and fish together. I was told that they started throwing topwater in the morning, after no bites, they switched to soft plastics and they joked about whose worm was bigger than the other.

See what I mean: Boys will be boys.

After a few juveniles took their worms, the bass started smashing some shad on top. They picked up their crankbaits and for the next hour they had one of the best bites Marc has ever enjoyed.

They quickly caught a number of fish over 5 pounds and occasionally they would catch one of the fatter chicks (Marc’s words, not mine). Each of them had one over 8 and one over 7.

They both came back smiling ear to ear. I really hope they didn’t offend Eduardo, because he knows more English than he let on. Marc and Pete were both really happy that they got to fish together after the long wait. More importantly, he got to fish with ME that same afternoon. What a bonus. Here’s his recounting of the trip as we prepared to go home:
