Brand Nubian Fishing Goals
I guess I had heard the word “Nubian” before, and knew that it had some connection to Africa, but I’m not embarrassed to admit that beyond that I was clueless about the place. My only prior knowledge of Sudan was through the late “Dinka Dunker” Manute Bol, who played for hometown team when I was in high school, and later worked as an activist for Sudanese refuges.
Well, I still don’t know much about the country or the region, except that I want to go. Is it safe? Possibly. Is it accessible? Surprisingly easily through a variety of Middle Eastern hubs. Most importantly, this region has all sorts of bluewater and flats species – GTs, dogtooth tuna, milkfish – and, even better, some brightly colored Yellow Margin Triggerfish. Also, it looks remarkably deserted. We’re running out of places like that in the world, and I want to see a few more before I kick the bucket.
Here’s the video that tempted me, found via The Fiberglass Manifesto:
If that doesn’t do it for you, or (more likely) you want more, check out these other videos:

The only US Outfitter I could booking trips to the region was Fly Water Travel in Oregon. There are also some others abroad you might want to consult if you want to jump on the opportunity:
The Red Sea, several hundred miles of mostly-uninhabited coastline, and all sorts of colorful and hard-pulling fish await. I’m not sure where this one goes on my bucket list, but it’s definitely up there.
