New Florida Air Routes for Northern Anglers

Vintage Florida Postcard Vacation

With the Omicron variant of COVID now rising, there exists the chance that international fishing travel may again be curtailed or burdened in the future. It doesn’t help that it occurs as many of us in northern climes are being confronted by a few months of miserable weather and the resulting likelihood of going stir crazy.

Fortunately, there’s always Florida. I consider Alaska to be the most like an “exotic” trip you can take while remaining within the US, but given how populated and developed it is the Sunshine State still offers traveling fishermen and women a lot of bang for their buck: Okeechobee and other bass fisheries are scattered throughout the state; there are peacocks in several counties; and of course the inshore and offshore options are numerous. We’re excited for a planned May 2022 trip to Islamorada to try to capture tarpon, along with other species.

American has long maintained a hub in Miami and there are numerous medium to large airports throughout the state, but the southern end continues to gain new routes. Here are some you might consider:

Spirit airlines new routes from the northeast to Miami

Spirit to Miami – 30 new routes

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines may not be a universal favorite, but they’ve expanded a lot during the pandemic, and this fall they’ve added a lot of new flights to Miami. This includes a lot of direct flights to northern cities, including Baltimore, Newark, Boston, Chicago and New York (LGA). Perhaps more notably for those looking to head to Casa Vieja Lodge with us, they’ve added four flights per week to Guatemala City. There is great peacock bass fishing in the canals behind the Miami airport, so you can theoretically be fishing within minutes of getting off the big bird.

Frontier Airlines new routes from the northeast to Ft. Lauderdale

Frontier to Fort Lauderdale – 12 new routes

Frontier has also gone in whole hog to lure in anglers (well, maybe not just anglers) looking to escape the cold, with flights to cities including Buffalo, Philly, Rochester, Green Bay and Portland, Maine. They’ve also added routes from Providence, Buffalo and Hartford to Cancun; and flights from Boston and Hartford to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in case those destinations are more appealing to you.
