Summer 2023 Fishing Travel Links – By Land, By Air, By Sea
If you’re too busy ripping lips to read or watch or listen to the news, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, fellow anglers. We’ve assembled a hodgepodge of newsworthy and semi-newsworthy articles from other sources that might inspire or help you on your upcoming fishing travels. Here they are, in no particular order:
Frontier Airlines Announces Nonstop Service from Atlanta to Guatemala City, Santo Domingo, San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Ontario, Calif. — We’ve previously flown through Atlanta on Delta once on the way to Guatemala (and it was super-cheap) but more choices is always a good thing – ideally this addition will keep prices low and offer more time options for our trips to Casa Vieja Lodge.
Air travel hack using fishing gear really works: ‘Absolutely every time’ — Our friend Steve Yatomi recommended a Scott-E-Vest when we went to Africa, where some of the float planes limited us to 33 pounds of luggage apiece, carry-on and checked bag included. It seems that others are figuring out this hack nearly a decade later. As Bill Murray said of his Army camo, “Chicks in New York paying top dollar for this garbage.”
Clear announces discounted membership for Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members — Despite some slight misgivings, we’re still using CLEAR religiously. This isn’t a great deal – in fact, we got a better discount with our AmEx – but if it’s your best option, at least you get some miles, too.
Clear is trying to turn our summer of travel hell into a branding opportunity — More CLEAR news. As it gets more popular, they’re making it even easier for subscribers with “Reserve Powered by Clear,” which allows you to make an appointment to jump to the front of the line at 20 different airports, for no cost beyond that of your subscription.
A year after Yellowstone floods, fishing guides have to learn 'a whole new river' — While I never cheer for natural disasters, I like the idea of an “old” fishery becoming new again, especially since “from an ecological perspective, the flooding benefitted fish habitat.” What would happen if one of our other favorite fisheries, like El Salto or the Gulf of Chiriqui, got a major relandscaping?
Drought forces Canal to decrease the draft of neopanamax ships — Yellowstone may have flooded, but our friends in Panama could use some precipitation. This likely won’t affect our May 2024 trip in any way, but it could affect the supply chain or the price of goods.
Ford's New Transit Trail Could Be a #VanLife Revolution — I don’t think it will pull a bass boat particularly well, so it’s probably not ideal for the Robbins crew, but if you’re looking to custom build a camper van, it appears that Ford is going to give you a great option at a reasonable cost.
The dorado: Mexico’s tropical trophy fish stuck in legal limbo — Our 20-plus Mexican adventures have all been on the freshwater side of things, but we’re planning a Baja trip for 2025, and we’d like one of our favorite fighting/eating fish from Guatemala and Panama to be on the agenda and on the menu.
Even more lounges available with your Priority Pass membership — More Priority Pass lounges equals more reason to keep our pricey AmEx Platinum. I don’t see us using many (or any) of the options in Asia or the Middle East in the short term, but the Dallas, Orlando and Canadian options might see our smiling faces.
Panama's Copa Airlines to add 64 aircraft to its fleet by 2028 — Copa seems to be constantly expanding it’s options within the US and abroad, which is excellent news for those of us trying to figure out how to get to Panama as often as possible.
As always, we look forward to hearing your summer fish stories.
