How to Tie the Crazy Alberto Knot

Alberto Knie, inventor of the Crazy Alberto knot

If you’re going to join two different lines, whether it be braid-to-fluorocarbon or braid-to-monofilament or something else, you want to make sure that you have complete confidence in the connecting knot. Lots of people like the Double-Uni, while others think it’s not strong enough, or too bulky to travel through smaller guides. Others prefer the FG Knot, which is remarkably strong and thin, but is also difficult to learn to tie. After a lot of practice, I feel like I’m pretty good at it, but I still struggle in a rocking boat and a heavy wind.

Enter the “Crazy Alberto” knot, but first a few details:

  • Who is Crazy Alberto? The knot is named for Alberto Knie, a multi-species expert best known for his extreme dedication to surf fishing in particular. He’s also a founder of Tactical Anglers.

  • Is it an original type of knot? It is a variation of the Albright Knot.

  • What are the advantages of this knot? It is fairly easy to tie and get right on the first attempt, and retains most of the two lines’ strength.

  • Can I buy a tool to help me tie it? It’s not a terribly difficult knot to tie with two hands, but if you have trouble keeping your loops even and in place, the Tackle Tour guys recently made a social media post about the “Uncle Jim Tool” that they said will make you feel like you have more hands.

Basic Instructions

  1. Make a loop in the mono/flouro leader and run 8-12” of braid line through the loop you’ve created.

  2. Hold the loop and the braid in one hand and make seven wraps of braid around the double mono/fluoro created by making the loop. The wraps should be headed away from the loop.

  3. Wrap back toward the loop 7 more times, making each wrap over each of the previous wraps.

  4. Feed the tag end back through the loop in the direction that it entered the loop.

  5. Wet and pull the wraps tight, slowly siding them toward the end of the loop.

  6. Cut the tag ends of both the braided line and the mono/fluoro loop.
