More Roosterfish Art and Gear We Love
Our second trip to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge scratched my roosterfish itch a bit, after a 26 year lag between Pez Gallo captures. Nevertheless, like any deflowering, rather than satisfying the urge it just whetted my appetite for more. They fight hard, live in beautiful places, and their combs and distinctive striping help them stand out from all of other several dozen fish species I’ve caught. I’m sure at some point we will have to get a rooster replica, but until then they’ll live in our dreams.
Of course, if you too are fascinated by these inshore brawlers, there are plenty of hats, shirts and artwork depicting them. Here are nine more examples that have caught my eye recently.
Cody Richardson makes some of the most incredible fish art we’ve ever seen, so if you have a line on a bunch of Panamanian plates, let us know and we might be tempted. Of course, we need more wall space.
Another sculpture I covet, this one made of scrap parts. Love the mahi and the tuna as well, although the tarpon may be my favorite – hoping to catch my first in Florida next May.
Larko’s art is distinctive and spans an incredibly wide array of species, but the rooster’s unique profile lends itself particularly well to her style. This one is both attention-grabbing and subdued at the same time.
Until we started writing this blog, I didn’t know much about wood-burning art, but now I’ve seen pyrography from all over the globe and feel certain we’ll add one to the collection at some point. Patrick Tucker makes some great ones. I really like his mahi, but the wahoo may be my favorite – Hanna has caught one (a baby), but I have not…yet.
We’ve outlined some of Predator’s other offerings in the past, including some unconventional subjects, but this silhouette stands out and will remind you of tropical settings on cold mornings.
Not only is this a badass shirt, but your purchase benefits natural resources. Ten percent of all proceeds go directly to the IGFA to fund conservation and education. Additionally, every purchase plants a mangrove through MANG’s Buy One. Plant One.® initiative.
If you don’t have room for a sculpture or painting, perhaps a decal will show off your admiration for the species – on your vehicle, water bottle or laptop.
I haven’t been to Spain since 1984, at which point I technically was not of drinking age, but if I ever go back I’ll make a beeline to this pub. [Not quite sure what to make of the accompanying artwork).
Drink the rooster.
If you know of any others that are in some way unique or eye-catching, please let us know. Until then, we’re dreaming about our 2022 return to the Gulf of Chiriquí.
