Mother’s Day Gifts 2023 – If Mom Likes to Travel and Fish
She brought you into this world, and she can easily take you out – but the best way to keep the peace with mom is to fish together. It’s even better if you take her to some sort of distant, exotic or at least extremely fertile fishery. If that won’t work, or if you want to add something to make the experience better, here are some ideas given the places we go and the techniques we like to use.
If she’s headed to Casa Vieja Lodge
Yes, her eyesight may be getting worse, or may already be strained, but that doesn’t mean she can’t wear quality, fashionable polarized glasses.
If she’s headed to Sportfish Panama Island Lodge
Now available in new colors, with the same great sun protection and ability to wash out the tuna blood.
If she’s headed to Anglers Inn Mexico
If she’s headed when the water’s up, fish it like a spinnerbait in and around brush. When the water’s down, drag it across rocky points and humps.
If she’s headed to Bear Trail Lodge
Use them on your halibut trip before or after, then hose these super-comfortable shorties off to wear around the lodge like a slipper or tennis shoe.
If she’s getting into swimbaiting
Does more with less effort than many of the more common pre-rigged soft swimbaits, and won’t break the bank. I fished with my Outdoor Life editor recently and he was throwing one, and while I immediately thought to get one for myself, I’m sure mom could work the fire out of it, too.
As noted above, what mom really wants is to spend time with her kids and grandkids. Plan a fishing trip together. It could be in your neighborhood pond or a backyard stream, but if budget allows it might not hurt to splurge on something special. While I come from a generally non-fishing family, one of the highlights of my life was watching my 76 year-old mother fight a sailfish on her birthday.
