Non-Fishing Favorites in Islamorada
The older I get, the more I tend to appreciate the “other things” that make a fishing trip great. Of course, in order to be a truly epic trip, the fishing has to be exceptional in one or more ways. However, good company, good food and good drinks can make a bad trip decent, and a good trip fantastic.
Until our recent trip to Islamorada, I hadn’t been to the Keys since March of 1992, when six of us college idiots “borrowed” a friend’s uncle’s house on Cudjoe Key and spent the days and nights terrorizing Key West. We’d passed through Islamorada on our drive down from Tampa, but spent no meaningful time there. On this more recent adventure, we spent parts of five days and all of four nights there. We have and will describe the fishing in other posts, but here are some other aspects of the trip that get our unabashed recommendations.
There’s a lot to like about Islamorada – it’s easy to get there, yet it feels remote. There are more charter boats (both inshore and offshore) than stoplights by a wide margin. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s worth the trip. We’ll be back to revisit some of these favorites and to add some new ones. Let us know if you want a recommendation for a fishing guide, a place to stay or a restaurant/brewery.
