Roosterfish Tattoos of Instagram

Yellowfin tuna are the centerpiece of our repeated trips to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge, but the beauty of the fishery is its variety. Within a single day, or actually within a matter of minutes, you can bounce from tuna to billfish to inshore species. The bucket list species that many of our fellow travelers seem to focus upon is roosterfish – Pez Gallo – even more than marlin or sailfish or any other exotic.

Maybe it’s because of their limited geographic availability or their reputation for being brutal fighters, but I’m sure a lot of it comes down to the rooster’s look. Their striping and the long spines of its dorsal “comb” are incredibly distinctive. That makes them prime fodder for tattoos. Here are some of the best we’ve found on Instagram:

Just remember — it’s extremely bad form to get the roosterfish tattooed on your skin before you actually catch one. If you’d like to join us on a trip to Sport Fish Panama Lodge, email us today. We can’t guarantee you’ll bag your rooster, but with a concerted effort the odds are pretty good.
