Wolf Fish Get in Your Head

Outdoor writer pete robbins with a bass caught at Lake Picachos and a wolf fish caught in Mato Grosso brazil

When Billy Chapman took a group of us south of Manaus in September of 2019, we caught peacocks and trophy payara, but the goal of the trip was to find world-class fishing for wolf fish – aka Traíra or Hoplias. Mission accomplished – we whacked a bunch of big ones on both familiar topwaters and especially on an Argentinian crankbait called a Cucu.

I wanted to commemorate the great experience, so even though I tend to shy away from fishing jerseys (aka “brag rags” or “goober shirts”) I bought on with old wolfie on it. Even though I haven’t been back to the Amazon since then, I still wear it proudly on special occasions. At some point in the future I’ll probably blog about some of the other, more generally-wearable shirts that depict this hideous-but-powerful predator, but I’m a little bummed that I didn’t get a hat to match. A recent search turned up the following options, none of which appear to be available stateside.

If you get the chance to fish for them — with or without the hat to match the job — don’t pass it up.
