Dad Deserves Better This Year
Whether you hit a home run on Mother’s Day or struck out, there’s a good way to remain in your parents’ will – come through in a big way on Father’s Day. You and dad may have butted heads on occasion, but fishing is the one thing that brings everyone together. It’s a sign that you care. Here are some gift ideas that won’t break the bank, and will make him quite happy. We’ve tailored them to some of our favorite destinations.
If he’s headed to Mexico for bass…
I didn’t know much about Douglas until my friend Kyle Patrick brought some to El Salto in 2020, and I finally got a few earlier this year. They’re super-light, buttery-smooth, and technique specific. I’ve been incredibly impressed. That 7’11” heavy-fast is an absolute beast but there are a variety of other models that may fit your needs better.
If he loves fishing in the Keys…
Everything Simms makes is mission-focused, and these shirts come in a variety of fish patterns, but the camo tarpon on a steel blue fabric may be my favorite. They’re UPF 50, and the hood will keep his increasingly hair-free noggin protected from the sun, too.
If you’re all going to Guatemala for sailfish…
If dad is still rocking the flip-ups from his corporate softball days, or the aviators he bought when “Top Gun” was released, it’s time to make him a little bit cooler and help him see those big sailfish “wiper blading” through your spread, so he knows which rod to grab. There are three different frame colors and seven different lenses.
If the next destination is Panama for tuna…
AFTCO’s Tactical Shorts are my favorites, my everyday go-to pair, but these may get the nod for Panama because they have the AFGUARD stain release technology, and when tuna blood starts flying around the deck you’ll be glad that’s the case – unless you wear it as a badge of honor.
If the family will be flying to Alaska…
If you’re going to be on boats and float planes and generally around water anywhere, you need a waterproof bag or backpack to keep your valuables safe and dry. We have several single-compartment bags that are OK, but ultimately you need to upgrade to something you can submerge and not worry about. This is that something.

Of course, the best way to show dad that you care is to spend time with him in any of these places. If you’d like help setting up a trip, email Hanna at any time and she’ll give you unfiltered advice.
If that’s not feasible, and he already has something similar to these items, or you’re not sure what se wants – but he likes to fish and travel – think about the following:
Pay for an airfare upgrade;
Consider gifting him a lounge or Priority Pass membership;
If he travels internationally, encourage him to sign up for Global Entry; and
If his most-used airport offers it, get him a membership in CLEAR.
