Flutter Spooning With Sand Bass, Shiners and Salmonids

Pete Robbins, Spoon, Yellow Bass

We’ve enjoyed several great sessions at Lake El Salto where a flutter spoon has produced numbers of fish, including some big’uns. Most of the time we’ve used some sort of chrome or shad-patterned spoon – partially because that’s what we had, and also because they work well as a universal baitfish imitator. However, one of my favorite crankbaits down there is a Strike King XD Series in “barfish.” In fact, a 10XD in barfish produced my El Salto personal best. I don’t know why it works, because to the best of my knowledge there are no yellow bass or white bass anywhere nearby.

Nevertheless, just like chocolate and peanut butter, sometimes two great tastes taste great together – so I set out to see if I could stock up on some flutter spoons in a pattern that resembles my crankbait confidence hue. Here are a few:

But what if you fish in Florida and want to chase some offshore bass in the rare deep water schooling spots? Consider a golden shiner spoon:

And that’s not all. If there’s a baitfish, you want to replicate there may be a spoon at Tackle Warehouse that has you covered. Check out the following pair:
