Seven Reasonably-Priced Gifts for the Mexico-Bound Bass Angler
Even under highly similar conditions, every bass fishing trip to Mexico is slightly different. They may relentlessly eat a lipless crankbait one day, and then the next day they’re keyed in on topwaters. That’s clearly a first-world problem for visitors, but it makes buying gifts a for Mexico-bound anglers a little bit difficult. I wish I could tell you “Buy this one thing and they’ll break their PB time after time,” but I’d be lying. Instead, I’d encourage you to hedge your bets by getting things that will help them on just about every trip. Here are seven options that won’t break the bank.
You don’t want your loved one to lose the fish of a lifetime because they used bad line, so get them a bulk spool of 16-, 18- or 20-pound test and you can be assured that they’ll have a highly-consistent, abrasion-resistant attachment to their quarry.
I’m religious about replacing my trebles on crankbaits when I’m South of the Border because a single rolled point or bent out hook can lead to heartbreak. They’ll be fishing around heavy cover for rough-mouthed bass, so the 2X version in sizes from #4 to #1/0 will cover most cranking options.
We don’t use the 10XD on every trip but we’ve come pretty close in recent years because it’s the premier tool in its class and tends to catch larger-than-average bass. I carry a lot of colors, but Powder Blue Chartreuse, Green Gizzard Shad and Citrus Shad are good starting points.
Unfortunately the 6-inch models don’t come in bulk packs like the 5-inchers, but that just means you can give your recipient a greater variety of colors. When in doubt, go Green Pumpkin or Watermelon or cover your bases with the GP/Watermelon Laminate.
I own a lot of shorts, including three pairs of these, and I consistently pull them to the top of the pile because they fit impeccably, have the right pocket placements, and resist fish blood and other stains.
It may look like just an oversized Ziploc, but this tough sack will hold a lot of gear and keep it dry and accessible. Indeed, your recipient can use it to store more than enough soft plastics for the day, or all of his or her terminal tackle.
There’s not a great topwater bite on every trip, but when it’s on it’s absolutely insane, and if I had to pick just one surface lure for Mexico it would be the larger Rico in any white or natural baitfish pattern.
