Special Colors of the Megabass PopMax

White Python Megabass PopMax topwater is an excellent choice for your first JDM investment

I'm not sure that anyone short of Yuki Ito himself lives and breathes the Megabass lifestyle more than my friend Lin Bell. Within his Toano, Virginia shop (and also on his Jeep parked outside) there are all sorts of odes to the brand. While the Fishing Pro Tech world headquarters is not a large store, it's jam-packed with all sorts of Megabass goodness, including some special items and special colors that are hard to find elsewhere.

While lots of you may be aware of the Vision 110, the Dark Sleeper and the Giant Dog-X, for some reason the Megabass topwater poppers generally fly under the radar. That's a mistake, especially with respect to the Pop Max, because it's different than anything else out there. I've made no secret of the fact that the Rico is my go-to (and the larger Rio Rico in Mexico), but you could make the case that the Splash-It and the Yellow Magic, along with some others are functionally similar. The recently-reintroduced Pop-R P70, too. The PopMax has a totally different sound profile because of a gill system with multiple water intakes. There are times when that makes a difference.

If you're just starting out with the PopMax, I'd suggest one or two of the following color patterns:

  • Something white, like Bahama Milk Pearl or White Python

  • A shad imitator, like GP Pro Blue or Threadfin Shad

  • An "alternative forage" imitation, like Perch or Secret Gill

But once you get beyond those initial entry points, there is a deep rabbit hole of options to explore, and Lin has some of the most coveted limited-edition versions available. Here he is describing four of his favorites:

If you're interested in obtaining any of these special-edition PopMax topwaters, either to fish or to collect, contact Lin at 757-566-1278. He's been a Megabass dealer since 1993, and can provide more information about the lures' lineage than you might have thought possible.
