What Bryant Smith Throws on Clear Lake in April

Professional angler Bryant Smith over a map of Clear Lake

Bassmaster Elite Series sophomore Bryant Smith burst onto the scene last year with a 13th place finish in the AOY race, a record-setting bag of smallmouths, and a berth in the 2024 Classic. The California pro is continuing to chase his dreams around the country this year, a quest that’ll keep him away from his home state for much of the spring. The bass and other anglers on Clear Lake are probably breathing a little easier with Smith gone, but there are few places he’d rather be in April.

“It depends on the weather, but generally the fish are just starting to move up in the later part of the month,” he said. “Then it busts wide open. It’s a great time of year get a bunch of bites.”

Here’s what he’d throw on Clear Lake in April:

6-inch Strike King Ocho Wacky Rig

Green pumpkin, wacky rigged on a 1/0 hook

Strike King Tour Grade Double Willow Spinnerbait 1/2 ounce chartreuse white

½ ounce, chartreuse/white, with nickel and gold blades

G-Ratt Sneaky Pete Glide Bait Hitch color

Hitch color. “It’s a really good all-around glide bait and it doesn’t break the bank.”

Strike King Tour Grade Bladed Titanium Umbrella Rig with TN Shad Rage Swimmer

“Especially if it’s still cooler. I keep it super light, with 1/8 ounce jigheads and 3.8 or 4.8 Rage Swimmer in Tennessee Shad”

KVD 300 Jerkbait Pro Bone

Pro Bone. “I’m fishing it shallow, in 3 to 6 feet of water.”
