Alaska: Are You Tuf Enough?

Just as an Aloha Shirt is suitable for work on all occasions in Hawaii, so too does Alaska have an all-purpose piece of clothing. While the 50th state prefers something on your torso, to find the “National” attire of the 49th state you need to look lower.

No, lower than that.

Drop all the way down to the feet, or at least to the knees, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

You cannot swing a dead chum salmon in Alaska without hitting someone wearing Xtratuf footwear. Men, women, kids, doesn’t matter. Babies and old people, they like ‘em just the same. Lieutenant Dan probably wore a pair when he visited. You don’t even have to head out to the coast where the commercial fishing boats and recreational boats beckon as the shoes’ natural habitat. In fact, before you leave the airport you’re likely to see six or eight pairs, if not more.

It makes a lot of sense. They’re comfortable, waterproof, nearly indestructible, and they’re available in everything from a true shoe, all the way up to 15 inches tall. The color selection is extensive, too, with solids, Kryptek patterns and other options.

In fact, Xtratuf has also produced some really creative collaborations with companies like Fishewear

As well as Salmon Sisters

They’re not just for Alaska, however. There’s no reason those of us in the Lower 48 can’t wear them, especially if we spend time outside in “weather,” but really for any purpose.

As you’ll see with a few searches of Instagram or Google, plenty of wedding parties have found a way to make them a fun part of their celebrations.
