Sailfish Shirts for Dining Out
As we’ve dipped our toes slightly into the billfish world, we’ve found ourselves a little bit intimidated. After all, the price of my bass boat is roughly equivalent to one of these dudes’ annual fuel bills. Therefore, while we still wear our time-tested sun-protective shirts and shorts on the boat, when it comes to dinner we feel the need to up our game a little bit. It’s not required, but it makes us feel a little bit more respectable. In my searches to find some options for future trips, I’ve focused on sailfish-specific gear, since that’s the species we have the most experience with so far. Here are a list of options we’ve found.
Bamboo Cay produces four sailfish embroidered shirts. One of my favorites is the “Mighty Sailfish” in chalk blue, which features a wraparound tail.
I also like “Shake the Hook” which has the sail’s bill emerging from the front pocket.
Scales Gear of Florida has lots of fishy gear, much of it dedicated to billfish, and I really like this “Striker Stripes” shirt that is patterned with sails in the froth.
Their “Tropical Slam” is a little bit more traditional:
You don’t need to go to a specialty retailer to get sailfish-inspired gear. Here’s a very reasonable one from the Bob Timberlake lineup at Bass Pro Shops.
I have Hook & Tackle’s mahi-embroidered button-down, and it was a go-to on this most recent trip. They offer several sailfish options, too, including “Sailfish Chase”
And a black version with a horizontal sail across the back:
Huk’s lineup seems to change frequently, but the one with sailfish on it is the one named after Hawaii’s marlin capital, Kona
Guy Harvey is a vaunted name in the offshore world and they offer multiple button-downs with sailfish on them, including a seersucker version:
Guy Harvey also has a more casual woven billfish-themed shirt:
And if you really want to dress things up, Vineyard Vines offers several sailfish-themed ties:
We hope we never go someplace so fancy that we need to dress up our fishing gear that much.
If you’d like to go someplace where one of these shirts fits in perfectly, we recommend Casa Vieja Lodge. Email us for details about that venue.
