Snook Lids

Snook double in Everglades National Park

One of the most pleasant unexpected experiences of our recent trip to Islamorada was the heavy duty snook bite. The tarpon may have gotten ornery and standoffish, but the linesiders were ready to play. On Day Two, Captain Mark Cockerham took us to an area-that-shall-not-be-named where we proceeded to catch one snook after another after another. We would have stayed longer but for two things: first, the resident sharks got wise to us and started biting off fish after fish; and second, the tide was running out and if we didn’t leave we’d get stuck. But while it lasted it was beyond epic. They bite aggressively and they pull hard. I can see why so many anglers target them – but only once I got back and did a little research did I see how many snook tributes there are on hats, shirts and jewelry. Here are some of my favorite lids featuring one of my new favorite species.

Mang Gear

The choices are remarkably broad — from leather patches to cork to Gyotaku, both anatomically correct and cartoonish, and all sorts of celebrations of flats fishing and Florida. Get down there, catch a few for yourself, and then we’ve got you (and your dome) covered.
