The Perfect Recipe to Fillet a Crappie

Hanna Robbins filleting a walleye in Virginia

Earlier this year Pete caught a walleye on Lake Anna, the first walleye he’d landed in Virginia in 30 years of fishing here. He threw it in the livewell and brought it home for me to cook and clean. I watched some YouTube videos, tried to sharpen his duller-than-a-kitchen-knife blade and attempted to fillet the fish.

There was only one fish, so if I didn’t do it right we wouldn’t eat.

In the end, I did a decent but far from perfect job with it. I definitely need a better knife, more practice and a few more fish to fry. We still had enough to eat and it was great.

I already showed you how we “shot docks” for crappie on my recent trip to Table Rock to fish with Chad Morgenthaler. After teaching us how to locate and catch them, the next step was to learn how to get them ready for the pan. As you can see in the video linked below, he made it look easy.

It looks like I will be purchasing a Bubba Fillet Knife and finding a local fishery where I can catch crappie. I think I am going to need a bigger freezer.
