Rainbow trout flyout in Katmai National Park

When we head to Bear Trail Lodge in Alaska, we savor the multi-species action. In the course of a single day it’s possible to catch multiple species of salmon, trout and char. For many visitors, the trophy rainbow trout of the Bristol Bay watershed are the draw. Indeed, Bear Trail Lodge has a wall dedicated to those who conquer 30-inch ‘bows while staying there. We’re still striving to hit that mark (might require a fall trip some year in the future) but I can tell you from experience that one much smaller than that will give you a workout on a 6-weight fly rod.

If you want to fully show off your fondness for rainbow trout, there’s a lid that’ll help you represent. Here are a few:

Luckily, the rainbow trout is one of the most popular and storied sportfish in the world, so if none of these excite you, there are plenty of other choices. To quote Ludacris, you’ve got to “throw dem bows” in whatever way works best for you. In our humble opinion, the best hat you can get is one directly from Bear Trail Lodge themselves.
