Celebrate Fish Tacos Any Day of the Week

Mahi fish tacos on the boat at Casa Vieja Lodge Guatemala

While we travel to Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala largely for the unparalleled sailfishing, there’s another species that plays a critical role: the mahi mahi. Most of the boats have kitchens onboard where the mates will prepare a hot lunch. If you catch a mahi early in the day, that’s what you’ll get. Otherwise, you have your choice between chicken and hamburgers. There’s nothing wrong with those latter options – it’s just that fresh-out-of-the-Pacific mahi that you caught yourself tastes so much better.

Because I am in the top ten sloppiest eaters in the world, I usually end up wearing my fish tacos, but even if you’re a neat freak there’s clothing that’ll show your love for this exceptional part of the food pyramid:

Taco Notes

  • If you’d like to book a trip to Casa Vieja to experience their mahi tacos firsthand (we don’t guarantee that you’ll catch one, but there’s a really good chance), email us and let’s get you there.

  • My other favorite fish for tacos is the yellowfin tuna that we bring home from Sport Fishing Panama Island Lodge.

  • On our last trip to Panama City we also enjoyed the fare at Maagoo’s Fish Tacos.

  • One sleeper fish for tacos – Alaskan rockfish, which is a welcome “bycatch” on our halibut trips.
