Bigger Lizards, Bigger Bass?

Godzilla attacking a city

You simply cannot go bass fishing in Mexico without an ample supply of lizards – or, as the guides say, “lee-zards.” You may go several trips without fishing them, choosing other plastics, but when all else fails, or you’re not quite sure what to throw, a big salamander on a Texas Rig or Carolina Rig is very hard to beat.

There’s rarely if ever any reason to throw one under 8 inches down there, and I’ve been very happy with the Zoom version, which is consistent, widely available, comes in a HUGE number of colors, and remains relatively inexpensive (still just $6.29 for a pack of 8). However, if you’re the type who “needs to show the fish something slightly different,” there are plenty of other dinosaur options on the market. Consider one or more of the following before your next trip:

Notes

  • The Powerbait version has the advantage of Berkley’s proven scent.

  • At the current (Spring 2023) price of $4.49 for a pack of 8, the Kriet Tail Lizard is a great bargain. It also comes in both “Tilapia” and “Tilapia Magic” color if matching the hatch is your jam.

  • Surprisingly, given the amount of plastic it requires, the monster Klone lizards are only $5.99 for a bag of 8.

  • With the paddletail, you can also swim the Lake Fork lizard like a spinnerbait or swim jig.
