Don’t Call it a Comeback

LL Cool J fishing

For the most part, modern lure staples are more effective than their discontinued predecessors of past decades. They are better engineered, with better components, and anglers for the most part are more discerning. At the same time, there will always be past versions that are proven or perceived to be better – like the old school Wiggle Warts that command a handsome price.

Sometimes lures are discontinued not because they don’t catch fish, but rather because they don’t sell well. Eventually a smaller manufacturer might take over the concept, or the original brand may bring it back. Here are a few that have come back or been improved upon in recent months. Consider them in your next purchase from Tackle Warehouse:

Gambler Bacon Rind Creature Bait junebug

Designed by Hall of Famer Basil Bacon and used by fellow Hall inductee Davy Hite to win the 1999 Bassmaster Classic.

Uncle Josh jumbo pork frog jig trailer

The original money jig trailer, especially in cold water. If your old jars are rusted shut, invest in a few new ones.

Gambler Ninja Spin three-bladed spinnerbait

A Florida staple that also excels in shallow grass situations around the country.

Rapala Countdown Minnow Elite Chartreuse back

A longtime multispecies gem in some new colors – many of which I’d had for burning on past trips to the Amazon.

Nories Sankaku T-San Neko Rig Worm for wacky rigging

Not a reintroduction in the truest sense, but this lure builds upon the weedless wacky heritage of the old T-shaped Kicker Fish Weedless Wacky Worm.
