Five New Products I’m Taking to Panama

Packing for a trip to Panama

Taking the right equipment, clothes and accessories on a fishing trip can make all the difference between a smooth, enjoyable excursion and one where you may not return. I test products in order to offer expert and HONEST guidance about their quality, durability, sizing, weight, packability, safety,  and value. My goal is to help you enhance your overall trip.

Basically, don’t sweat the small stuff, trust in me and go catch some fish.

Here are five items I’m taking on our upcoming trip to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge for a true stress test:

Rux Waterproof bag

Finding the right all-around carry-on travel bag isn’t as easy as you would think. Part of the Rux 70L (combination of a duffle bag and and bin) bundle is the Rux Waterproof Bag. The 25L+ size has grab handle, removeable shoulder straps, roll top and ties to lash it to boats, kayaks, racks or anything else.

Wiley X Founder Sunglasses

Protecting your eyes on and off the water is just as important as applying sunblock. The Wiley X Founder sunglasses in gloss crystal grey, with captivate polarized blue mirror lenses, seen perfect for larger-framed (giant craniums) heads like mine. They have a square frame, are lightweight, with rubber temples and seem really comfortable.

Staying hydrated on a daily basis is so important but on vacation it seems even more important (need to wash that alcohol out of you). That water in the cooler is often out of sight, out of mind. Size matters with any Yeti Rambler -- the bigger the better, left in plain sight, you can pick it up and quench your thirst. Yetis are stainless steel, so it’s puncture and rust-resistant and keeps drinks cold even in the heat. You can even get them customized!

Jack Wolfskin mosquito repellent button down shirt

Jack Wolfskin Women’s Barrier Mosquito Protection Pant and Shirt

Are you the person who if there are 100 people in a space and one mosquito, you’ll be the one that gets bit? That’s me!! The sun protective fabric is windproof, water repellent and breathable. The mosquito barrier is a special extra thick weave technique that will protect ME from insect bites, with no harmful chemicals.

Columbia PFG Uncharted Tech Tee blue

Columbia Women’s PFG Uncharted Tech Tee and Pull on Pants

Strategic packing is key when you have space and weight limits. Transitioning from plane to boat with the same clothing is critical. Columbia has an Omni-Shade UPF 50 tee that features Omni-Wick material. It’s longer than a crop, shorter than a normal tee, hits right below the waist band. The pull-on pants have the same sun technology, and feature an elastic waistband with interior drawcord, hand pockets, drop-in pocket on the right leg and elastic tapered cuffs. Both items are specifically made for fishing.

I’ll report back later about how they stand up to the rigors of travel and hard core popping, and whether the tuna blood washes out. Email me if you have any questions, or if you want to book a fishing trip.
