Seven Bluegill-Colored Spinnerbaits

Bluegill preferred bass forage

While the spinnerbait in general seems to have lost some of its time in the water due to the seeming domination of vibrating jigs and swim jigs, there’s no doubt that they’re still effective bass-catchers. Unfortunately, most of us tend to use a limited range of color and blade options. I’m guilty of it – I’d bet that 90% of mine are shad-colored, white or white and chartreuse. I was reminded not to be so narrow-minded recently when I interviewed Elite Series pro Bryant Smith for B.A.S.S. Times – he informed me that a bluegill-colored spinnerbait (Strike King is his preference) can be deadly. If you don’t have any in your arsenal, or need some more, here are seven that I think you should consider.

This is not a complete list – if your favorite spinnerbait does not come in a bluegill pattern, you can always do some Frankenstein moves with skirts, blades and marker pens to make the right.

Some of these models come in multiple bluegill colors and panfish patterns, so find the one that most closely replicates your local forage.
