Lucky Craft Options for Lobinas Mexicanas

Hanna Robbins caught a big El Salto largemouth on a Lucky Craft Slender Pointer Jerkbait

There was a time when the $20-25 price tags on many JDM lures seemed exorbitant. Maybe it’s the rise of the swimbait world, or my increased ability to spend more, or perhaps both, but I no longer recoil quite as strongly. I’d still rather spend five or ten bucks when possible, but if I think there’s a meaningful difference I’ll bite the bullet. Just as importantly, it’s made the price tags on most Lucky Craft lures seem downright quaint. I still recall cringing when I spent $15 on my first Pointer 78. Now I have a box of them and I’m particularly keen to throw high-end lures when I’m giant hunting at El Salto or Picachos in Mexico. Here are four options from the company that popped my Japanese lure cherry nearly 30 years ago:

Lucky Craft Slender Pointer Jerkbait Ghost Minnow

While certain other Japan-designed jerkbaits may be the reflexive choice for many of us, Hanna has had a few days at El Salto where this lure outfished anything and everything by a wide margin. She prefers Ghost Minnow.

Lucky Craft LC 1.5 squarebill chartreuse shad

This lure, previously marketed as the RC1.5 (Rick Clunn) in partnership with Bass Pro Shops, reinvigorated the squarebill market in the early part of this century. It’s the rare instance where a price has dropped substantially over time. Consider Blue Bream, Copper Perch or Chartreuse Shad for starters.

Lucky Craft Gunfish topwater Aurora Shad

While the walk-the-dog Sammy may be the most popular of Lucky Craft’s topwaters, this is the most distinctive and category-defining model. It’s exceptional for schooling fish. All of the shad colors are great, but I have confidence in Aurora Black.

Lucky Craft LC 1.5XD Crankbait Aurora Citrus

I’m a little bit afraid to throw LC’s super deep-divers into the thick stuff, but this option has much better quality control than the otherwise bite-producing Fat Free Guppies, so I like it in that 8-10 foot zone. Aurora Citrus is money.
