Have You Tried Sinking Braided Line? (Updated June 2024)
Since Randy Dearman first popularized braided line in the context of bass fishing circa 1994, it’s changed the way we’ve fished. I can’t imagine flipping matted vegetation or frogging without it. More recently, many anglers have adopted it for “light line tactics,” too. A main line of braid coupled with a fluorocarbon leader on a spinning rod provides multiple advantages – both in terms of performance and economy.
Most braids float. I know that some anglers don’t like that in certain scenarios. For example, if you flip your dropshot out there may be unnatural drag as it falls through the water. To combat that, several manufacturers have produced sinking braids. The JDM market was the first one I saw through a reference from Elite Series pro Matt Herren, but since then at least one US manufacturer has joined the party. Consider adding one of the following to your next Tackle Warehouse order:
Notes
Many anglers like the hi-vis braid for finesse techniques – especially if they’re “line watchers.”
I’ve yet to find bulk spools of these products.
Lunkerhunt offers “non-finesse” sinking braid up to 50 pound test.
