Talking Turkey and Tackle

Thanksgiving dinner spread

It’s a big day for eating, football and purveyors of stretchy pants across the country, but if you’re anything like me, that just gives you more time to think about fishing – and its relationship to Thanksgiving. Hanna got the jump on me yesterday with her guide to Thanksgiving lures, but I have a few of my own as leftovers.

Check out Mercer’s Water Turkey Fishing Lure, a Florida-made collector’s item.

If you’re more into the long rod, don’t forget that you can use turkey feathers to craft your flies. Here are a few articles on that topic to get you started.

The food-related fun doesn’t stop there. If you’re a fan of green beans (in a casserole or otherwise), check out the True Bass Hollow Body Swimbaits in the Green Bean color. [For the non-traditionalist foodies among you, they also come in Cream Pie, Hot Sauce, Fried Chicken and Jim Gaffigan’s favorite, Hot Pocket].

If your turkey is too dry, there’s always cranberry, and here are some of our favorite lures in that pattern:

Cranberry Zoom Mag II big worm

Dish it all up with a side of sweet potatoes (or sweet potato pie) – including these lures in that color:

Pumpkin Zoom Super Chunk and Big Bite Baits Kamikaze Swimon

And it wouldn’t be thanksgiving without some sort of pumpkin pie or pumpkin cheesecake or pumpkin bread and any sort of pumpkin spice drink to wash it down, so don’t forget the following in the oft-forgotten shade that’s a killer for bass all over the world:

Pumpkin colored soft plastic fishing lures

Remember, green pumpkin baits should always remain in your boat, but green pumpkins should be disposed of properly.
