Thanksgiving Cold Weather Lures for Fishing FINatics
November brings Thanksgiving and in most of the country it’s starting to get really cold. When that happens, fish tend to go deep or hide in cover and we have to find them and figure out how to catch them.
I am not a forward-facing sonar guru and I know I need to figure it out but most of the time I am not on the trolling motor where the screen is at my feet -- and to be honest it hurts my neck to look at it all day. I personally need to go back to the basics and just fish for those little boogers.
Here is a list of lures, Thanksgiving inspired, that can help you (and me) catch those fish this holiday season.
Jerkbaits
When you need to trigger and catch fish off guard, jerkbaits will get their attention. My favorite is he Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 112 and 97. I am thinking the BE Gill is a great Thanksgiving color.
Soft Plastics
Now that I know how to rig a dropshot (not a professional by any means) this would be a great time to perfect it. In the colder months, colder water, the dropshot is a great choice. Here are some colors I would choose in soft plastics, such as lizards, Craw Orange Swirl, Green Pumpkin, Green Pumpkin Texas Red and Watermelon Red Flake.
The bread and butter of everyone’s tackle box is the reliable Senko. Here are some colors I might test and use this winter, Pumpkin Black and Green Flake, Rootbeer Green and Copper Flake, Pumpkin Black Flake and Cajun Craw.
Jigs
Let’s get jiggy with it -- a finesse jig with a smaller trailer is often best at this time of year. During the winter and early spring fish get around rocks as the rocks hold heat, so make a jig look like a crawfish around them. Be sure you use a compact jig with a smaller skirt and no big flapping trailers.
Let’s talk some of my favorite brands and colors:
War Eagle Heavy Finesse Jig, Green Pumpkin Orange, Wild Craw, PB&J
Buckeye Lures Flat Top Finesse Jigs, Perfect Craw
Crankbaits
Cranking can be a great way to get the lethargic late fall and early winter bass active. You will need to slow down the shimmering, vibrating action of the bait during this time, depending on the water temperature and the metabolism of the fish.
Flat sided crankbaits have a tighter action and show a less aggressive presentation which bass often like in colder water. Here are some of my favorites:
Strike King Chick Magnet, Natural Bream, Fire Craw and Tomato Soup
Rapala Ott’s Garage OG Slim 06, Classic Craw
If you want to cover more ground and go a little deeper, the Rapala DT10 in Demon may surprise you.
Lipless Crankbaits are loud and have and again have a tight action and are super easy to fish. I love the Berkley Warpig, and my favorite color in the summer is Blue Silver but for our Thanksgiving theme I’d go with Vintage Craw or Blood Orange Craw.
We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you have time to fish with family and friends.
