The Kenora Dinner Jacket (and Shoes to Match)

Lucky Brand Flannel Shirt Jacket

OK, I lied last week when I said that I was done shopping for our trip to Lake of the Woods. In between then and now Pete and I celebrated our 17th anniversary, and since we have everything that we need, we didn’t get each other gifts. Instead, we spent a day together, which included a few hours at a local outlet mall. We didn’t buy much, but I found a couple of really nice things that are perfect for the trip.

The first is a heavy-duty flannel shirt from Lucky Brand – exactly the type of garment that Bassmaster emcee dubbed the “Kenora Dinner Jacket” in honor of Elite Series pro Jeff Gustafson. “Gussy” is the absolute hammer on Lake of the Woods and he wore various flannels throughout the tournament on Lake Oahe. You might not think of Lucky Brand as a premier outfitter for the outdoors, but I find that much of their clothing is durable, functional and reasonably fashionable.

Not just any shirt will do, however. Mercer made clear that in order to qualify as a Kenora Dinner Jacket, the shirt must be able to comfortably hold two beers in each of the chest pockets. I’ve confirmed that this one will handle both Labatt and Molson.

I also got a pair of Sorel “Out and About” (you have to pronounce those words “oot” and “aboot” as the Canadians do) waterproof lace-up sneakers. Sorel may be US-based, but they’re known for quality footwear in harsh environments. I find that having good support helps me stand and fish all day and waterproof shoes prevent me from getting uncomfortable.

I may not have needed these items, but in my defense I did buy them for substantially-reduced prices at the outlets. Also, the next day I took several bags of clothing to our local donation center. I’m trying to be better about shopping, but I also want to be well-prepared for every trip and look good too.
