D’ Bears
I met Donna Gaunt on August 18, 1986, during our freshman year of college, which makes us antiques.
We were roommates from our sophomore year until we graduated, and then a few year later we moved back in together and it was just like old times.
Her college degree was fashion merchandising. She didn’t need to take home economics because she could have taught the class.
If anyone ever needed their pants shortened, a Halloween costume whipped up or a button sewed on (thank goodness my mom showed me how to do so as Donna was very busy) they knew where to find her: 211 W Willow, Normal IL, 61761 or Reeds Sporting Goods, where she worked sewing all the artwork and appliques on the sweatshirts for the sororities and fraternities.
She has always liked antiques. I have fond memories of trips with both our sets of parents to antique stores. We’d seek out deals and then take them home to fix up or re-create into something special. Donna always looked for antique bedspreads. You know, the ones that your Grandma probably had on her bed that kind of looked like tiny white cotton balls stuck on to an oversized sheet. Sure enough, Donna can take the chenille spreads that may be tattered, torn or stained and she upcycles the good parts into keepsake Teddy Bears.
She has made bears for many of my nieces and nephews. Recently our friends Aaron and Kristine had a little baby fisher girl named Ava and what better present to send her than one of Auntie D’s Bears?
Donna asked whether we wanted white or pink. I said, “I’m sending a fishing shirt and lure. Can you incorporate it in the design?” (knowing she would be able to) I told her to pick the color -- whatever color, whatever design, it was going to be amazing. They always are.
Sure enough, it exceeded expectations and Ava was thrilled.
If you are interested in a bear of your own and want to contact Donna, please do so through Facebook. She will be excited to create a distinctive keepsake that reflects you or your recipient.
P.S. She creates great blankets and pillows too.
