Flounder Finery
Flounder: I can’t believe I threw up in front of Dean Wormer
Boon: Face it, Kent, You threw up on Dean Wormer.
I used to occasionally fish for flounder out of Brooklyn, New York, in the mid-80s, but despite occasionally enjoying them on a plate (and chasing their distant cousin, the halibut), I haven’t really tangled with them in over 30 years.
Nevertheless, I know there are a lot of flounder freaks out there – but until I did a little bit of research, I had no idea that they wear their flatfish love on their sleeves, literally. Here are some great examples of flounder clothing, if you are so inclined.
I love this UV performance shirt from Fish Skinz, which not only depicts the flounder realistically, but more importantly shows him with a gig in his side (top?)
David Dunleavy, who makes fantastic clothing representing numerous different species, offers multiple flounder designs, in both regular t-shirts and performance shirts.
This one from Jason Mathias is also remarkably realistic
As is this one from Laguna Madre clothing company in Texas, where flounder fishing is almost a religion
In Jacksonville, Florida, there is an entire company devoted to flounder-oriented clothing – the apty-named Flounder Pounder Clothing – and they deserve props for using their sales as a way to raise money for a school for autistic children.
And if you need a flounder to hold your pants up, Red Fish Brand’s Pawleys Island Flounder Buckle is a solid choice
Hook N Hide offers a nice one as well — and as a bonus it’s also a bottle opener.
