I still believe that in many cases the best gift you can give a loved one or acquaintance is an experience – things eventually become obsolete, but memories of great days on the water are forever. Of course, most trips require some sort of gear, clothing or other tangible items, so there are plenty of great possibilities there, too. Here are some of the ones that we either own or would like to receive ourselves:
Since getting a few of these last year, they’ve become my go-to, first-out-of-the-dresser option. They stay cool in hot weather and you can layer ‘em up when it’s colder. Lots of colors, super-comfortable, and they don’t take on an unshakeable stank like some others.
I had so much fun and success using the 8’ casting rod for yellowfin tuna in Panama that I forgot it was a multi-piece stick. Now there’s no reason to fear using travel rods, because these have JDM quality and one-piece actions.

A Stella 14000 was my personal luxury indulgence for this year, the most I’ve ever paid for a reel, and I’m excited to test it out when we return to Panama in January. A smaller model produced my PB smallmouth a few years ago.
