ICAST 2022 – New for Globetrotting Anglers

ICAST 2022 new tackle for traveling anglers

Whether you’re heading across town or across the globe, high-quality gear is an asset for any angler. In the past, sometimes objects labeled “packable” or “travel” meant a diminution of performance, but increasingly you can get these items with no drop off in quality.

I’ve already outlined some of the new ICAST 2022 items that I’ll put to the test on my next trip to Lake El Salto and/or Lake Picachos. However, there were also some introductions that are more universal in nature. Here are a handful that piqued my interest.

Abu-Garcia Revo RKT SP super-fast spinning reel

Whether you’re headed off to catch bass, walleye, trout or a handful of saltwater species, a quality spinning reel can be worth its weight in gold. Unfortunately, historically most of them have been rather slow, which makes it hard to catch up with a rampaging bonefish or reel in your lure to fire out another cast to a feeding trout. This Revo comes in three sizes, all with a blazing 7.6:1 gear ratio. This is the only item on this list that I’ve already acquired, so I’ll have some initial feedback even before I take a trip elsewhere.

Eagle Claw 2.5 3-piece travel rod new for 2022

Manufacturers continue to refine and introduce multi-piece rods, and Eagle Claw has added this two rod series of affordable three-piece models. Like many others, they have a 7’ light action, but not as many manufacturers offer a 7’6” medium-heavy, a stick that opens up new opportunities and techniques in this space.

Major Craft America Benkei four-piece travel fishing rod

The American branch of this Japanese company has brought to market a series of travel rods with JDM stylings. They’re not bargain-priced, but not unreasonable, either, topping out at about $170 apiece. There are three baitcasting models and two spinning models, all four pieces, and they come with a travel case and a warranty.

Mustad Jawlock 3x, 4x and 5x treble hooks computer engineered

As I’ve written before, I’m a bit obsessive about replacing damaged or impaired treble hooks, especially when there’s a chance I’ll catch the fish of a lifetime. Now Mustad has added what they promise are the most consistent hooks on the market, featuring a gunmetal finish and corrosion resistance. I particularly like the fact that they come in 3X, 4X and 5X strengths for stronger-than-average species.

SPRO waterproof packable terminal tackle box

No matter where you’re headed to fish, you’ll need some sort of terminal tackle, whether it’s beads or swivels or hooks or sinkers. Two biggest downfalls? If you spill them out, or if water gets in. This box should substantially reduce if not eliminate those possibilities, and it’s eminently packable.

AFTCO ankle deck boots award winner at ICAST 2022

I’ve wanted this type of product for a long time, something with a less aggressive sole than my Muck Boots, but equally waterproof and bulletproof. I’ve been thrilled with the many, many products I’ve obtained from AFTCO over the years, and while my shoe closet is pretty full, I’m pretty sure that these all weather kicks will find themselves in there (or rather, ready to go in my Suburban/boat) sooner rather than later.
