More Ultra-Deep Diving Crankbaits for Mexico
One of the prime reasons we go to Anglers Inn Lake El Salto in May and June is because we love the ultra-deep cranking bite. It’s something that we don’t get to do much (if at all) around home, and I’m convinced that it’s a great way to catch a giant. Indeed, my El Salto personal best came on a Strike King 10XD in the barfish color several Junes back.
For me, the 10XD is a proven winner and when I’m cranking that 20 foot zone it’s my first call. Nevertheless, I’ve used the Berkley Dredger 20.5 and 25.5 successfully when a smaller profile seemed to help. I watched my friend Ray Heredia land a couple of full-grown units on the forerunner of the Lucky Craft 5.5 D20.
Since I published my first blog on the topic a while back, I’ve become aware that more manufacturers have seen the value in entering this market. Here are a handful more that reportedly dive to or beyond the 20 foot range on a long cast using the right tackle.
And here’s one that doesn’t quite hit the 20 foot mark, but look at that bill!
Remember, ultra-deep cranking requires specialized tackle if you want to achieve maximum depth, wobble, feel and landings. That means rods that will enable long casts and solid hooksets (without pulling the trebles free), reels with sufficient line capacity, and line that allows them to dive and wobble. You’ll also want to change trebles frequently and ensure that the split rings are up to the test. It’s one of our favorite ways to fish, but it can also be a chore and a heartbreaker if you’re not careful.
