Zoom Super Chunk Variety

Black Zoom Super Chunk

I’m old enough to remember when the original chunk-style trailer was effectively the only option out there to put on the back of your jigs – with the main choice being pork or plastic. Today, however, there are all different shapes of chunks, craws and creatures that’ll help you get a bite. The gateway to that proliferation, in my opinion, was Zoom’s introduction of the Super Chunk, sometimes referred to as the “rabbit ears.” It’s still my go-to in a wide variety of situations when bass want something with a lot of action. Consistent with Zoom’s history, it comes in a ton of colors, but if you want to get started with a limited budget, here are five that’ll cover most situations:

Solid Black Zoom Super Chunk

Black blue flake and black with red flake are also great, but solid black is just a bit more versatile.

Green Pumpkin Zoom Super Chunk Jig Trailer

Goes great with a green pumpkin jig, brown jig, PBJ, and so on.

Watermelon Seed Zoom Super Chunk Jig Trailer

May be better than green pumpkin in super-clear water or high pressure situations.

Sapphire Blue Zoom Super Chunk Jig Trailer

I really like this on tidal water or dirty water.

This is the one Steve Kennedy uses on the back of a swim jig that has won him tens of thousands of dollars.

Chunk Trailer Notes

  • Zoom’s Super Chunk comes in “Senior” and “Junior” sizes – 3.5” and 2”, respectively.

  • Depending on how you use it, and what action you want to create, you can either thread the chunk on or stab it through the middle of the “meat.”

  • Some anglers still use a toothpick through the chunk in front of the bend of the hook to keep the trailer from sliding off.

  • This basic selection can be modified by carrying a set of Spike-It markers or dipping dyes in colors including chartreuse, blue, red and orange.

Other Super Chunk Style Options

If for some reason the Zoom Super Chunk isn’t to your liking, or you think that your local fish have seen too many of them, here are some variations on the theme:
