Eleven Things You Shouldn’t Do During an Airport Layover

Airport brawl with bad consequences

I recently gave you a mostly-serious look into how to productively and/or comfortably spend a mid-length or longer airport layover. That list derived from a lot of experience in and near airports, some of it with a frown on my face. Here’s a follow-up list of things that’ll make the layover worse for you – or for others. Engage in any of them at your peril.

  1. Argue loudly with airport or airline staff about why things are taking so long.

  2. Make pointed statements about your host country’s politics or history.

  3. Make snide and obnoxious comments in a language you’re “sure no one understands” (because someone surely does).

  4. Unpack the entirety of your overstuffed carry-on and spread it out around you on the floor.

  5. Exchange too much currency at a usurious rate.

  6. Eat greasy food loaded with onions and garlic.

  7. Take a “shower” in a bathroom sink.

  8. Buy useless souvenirs that end with “and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.”

  9. Exit Security without bringing your itinerary, ID and passport.

  10. Trust your luggage to someone you just met while you go use the restroom.

  11. Allow your electronics to run down without any way to recharge them.

Is currency exchange at the airport a ripoff?
