The Outdoor Gear We Recommend
We may have a little bit of a hoarding problem. Good gear need not be expensive, but it has to improve the experience in some way. Whether it’s the right rod, a certain bait, or the world’s best rainsuit, we’ll give unfiltered opinions on what we use and why we use it.
No tackle shop on earth provides more specialized gear for bass than Tackle Warehouse. If you want it, they've got it in stock — whether it's a proven winner or the newest items on the market — and their service is exceptional.
Old School Potomac River Bass Lures
I joined a bass club in late 1995, but did not buy my first used bass boat until November of 1996, and continued to fish tournaments as a non-boater through 1997. That gave me opportunities to fish with many anglers — any time we were on the Potomac you could be sure that they had at least three of these six lures tied on.
Lures that Need to Get a Fair Shake at El Salto
I know that I recently wrote that I’m going to go back to basics on our upcoming trip to El Salto, and I meant it, but it wouldn’t be a Pete Robbins production if I didn’t have some other options at least in the on-deck circle. Here are some lures that aren’t quite new, but that I haven’t given a fair shake in Mexico.
Dad Deserves Better This Year
Whether you hit a home run on Mother’s Day or struck out, there’s a good way to remain in your parents’ will – come through in a big way on Father’s Day. It’s a sign that you care. Here are some gift ideas that won’t break the bank, and will make him quite happy. We’ve tailored them to some of our favorite destinations.
Bass Lures I Need to Start Throwing Again
Like anything else, fishing lures go in and out of style. Here are a handful that I used to fish frequently, that I still own in abundance, yet for some reason don’t get a lot of my love. I hereby resolve to work them back into the rotation.
My Own “Back to Basics” List for El Salto – June 2022
Hanna recently penned a column about her plans to go back to basics on our upcoming trip to Lake El Salto. It made me think that I’ve overcomplicated the process of fishing down there, to the point that I’m wasting casts and wasting time by retying or through indecision. With that in mind, here are three lures that are likely to be in heavy rotation on our upcoming trip.
Accessories Under $100 That Will Make a New (or New-to-You) Bass Boat Better
Bass boat prices are rising and the available options seem to be growing exponentially — but there are plenty of add-ons for under $100 that’ll make your experience safer and better.
Show Mom You Really, Really Care
OK, Mother’s Day is just about here, and if you’re like most of the other forgetful and occasionally ungrateful anglers out there you’ve probably forgotten to get her something. Big mistake, Junior. Assuming she likes to travel and fish, here are some gift ideas that are tailored to some of our favorite destinations.
Fly Fishing at Lake Picachos
While we’ve enjoyed fly fishing in Alaska and Montana, and we’ve considered trying it on Guatemalan sailfish, we’re not experts by any means. However, we know enough to know that the shallow, fertile waters of Lake Picachos are perfect for the long rod. Here are tips for fly fishing success on Mexican bass.
Even MORE Lures that Imitate Tilapia
It’s abundantly clear that largemouth bass in Mexico (and some parts of Texas and Florida) grow fat largely by eating tilapia. Accordingly, many anglers heading South of the Border look for custom paint jobs to “match the hatch.” I’m happy to feed the addiction, because new tilapia baits keep popping up.
Abundant and Specialized Travel Rod Options – April 2022
Just when I think I’ve found every multi-piece rod on the market today I inevitably seem to come across more options. Despite the fact that three-, four-, and even five-piece rods aren’t the preferred tools for the majority of anglers, manufacturers fill multiple niches with their rods aimed at traveling fishermen. Here are some more that I’ve found lately.
What Did You Catch It On? Lures for PBs Around the Globe
Post a picture of an impressive fish on Facebook or Instagram and you’re likely to get two questions: “How big was it?” and “What did you catch it on?” Here are some answers from Brazil, Alaska, Mexico and Africa, the lures that produced by personal bests.
Specialty Trailer Hooks
Not all trailer hooks are created equally or for the same purpose. Find the specialty model that fits your spoon, swimbait or frog and increase your landing percentage.
Fishing Scales for Heavyweights
When it comes to freshwater fish like bass, I’m a stickler for accurate weights. While the stories can be hyperbolic, the actual weights should not be. But what can you do when you catch fish in the 30+ lb. range? Here are some options, scales and otherwise.
This Could Save Your Life -- Testing out the SPOT Gen4
While many of our adventures are close to major population centers, we’ve taken a few that were in the far suburbs of “off the grid.” Of course, that remoteness comes with a certain risk if we’re outside the range of cellular phone service. We tested the SPOT Gen4 Satellite GPS messenger on our most recent trip to Guatemala.
Bassmaster Classic Product Introductions for Traveling Anglers
The Bassmaster Classic Expo has become a prime time for bass fishing manufacturers to introduce new products. Here are some of the best ones for traveling anglers from the 2022 show in Greenville, SC.
My June El Salto Lures: Back To the Basics
We’re headed back to Lake El Salto this June and I’m going back to the basics. On several of my last trips I decided that I wanted to try a bunch of new baits and I wasn’t going to stop fishing with a particular bait until it caught a fish. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. Now it’s time to go all-in on five lures that I feel are a sure thing.
Gan Craft’s Peacock Bass Swimbait
There are plenty of peacock bass imitating lures out there, but not all of them can stand up to the sometimes toothy thrashing of Amazonian beasts. Fortunately, there’s a new addition to the mix. The Gan Craft Shift 183 has a beautiful paint job and maintains its proper motion at high speeds.
Which Rods Should You Bring to El Salto?
I understand that some of you are picky about your rods. Maybe you’re loyal to a particular brand. Nothing I can say will dissuade you from bringing your own rods south of the border. If I told you that your own rods were categorically unnecessary, I’d be a hypocrite since I have 20 of them down there. If you decide to tote your own, bring some all-purpose models, but also consider which techniques are most likely to benefit from specialized actions or models.
Carolina Rigging for Lobinas Grandes in Mexico
At times fishing a Carolina Rig feels like watching paint dry, and when you break off it takes a long time to retie properly, another strike against it. At the same time, I’m honest enough to know that it can produce big fish and a lot of fish. There have been several times where we’ve been able to catch a few fish offshore on crankbaits, football jigs or Texas Rigs, while a Carolina Rig seemed to get bit on almost every cast.
Six New Items for Traveling Anglers at Tackle Warehouse
I’m unrepentant about the fact that I peruse the Tackle Warehouse “New Items” tab daily and still order far more gear than I can ever use in a lifetime – although I’ll die trying. Here are six of the most intriguing items for traveling anglers that they’ve added recently.
