Beer Thirty

Hanna drinking a Pacifio beer at Anglers Inn Lake El Salto Mexico

Every time I fish with my friend Chichi Rodriguez at Anglers Inn Lake El Salto in Mexico, I make sure to ask him early in the session what time it is. Without missing a beat, he pops open the cooler, opens a Pacifico (or two) and responds,  “Beer thirty.”

When I’m at home, I like to drink Pacifico, not only because it tastes good and goes down easy, but also because it reminds me of all of the incredible times I’ve had in Mexico. I’m not a heavy drinker by any means, but I like one or two occasionally, and they’re even better when they remind me of places I’ve been.

I like Gallo because it brings me back to sailfish in Guatemala.

A Windhoek reminds me of our trip down the Chobe River between Namibia and Botswana.

Alaskan Blonde reminds me of my overnight trip halibut fishing last summer out of Seward.

There are plenty of other beers I haven’t tried that have fishy names. Here are a few you might want to track down and try.

If you like green fish and IPAs, the Wallenpaupack Brewing Company makes an award winning Largemouth India Pale Ale. You might think that such a product would come from Texas or Alabama, but props to the Pennsylvania company for grabbing the name first. They also make a Smallmouth Session, which is more consistent with their region.

Piney River Brewing Company of Bucyrus, Missouri, makes a Bronzeback Pale Ale. I’ll have to try some on our next annual trip to Table Rock.

I’ve sworn off muskies after some success and loads of frustration, but Pecatonica Beer Company of Illinois makes a Muskelager that might be worth trying.

And Northwoods Brewpub of Wisconsin makes Mouthy Musky (along with “Wall-IPA” and “Floppin’ Crappie”)

Florida has an entire lineup that might remind me of Guatemala if I can’t find Gallo close to home – Sailfish Brewing Company. They also have brews named after white marlin and flounder (?!?!)

This has been a fun one to write. Look for future installments about other fish-related beers – and remember, even if you drink like a fish you should drink responsibly.
