Packing Reels for Lake El Salto May 2023
After 20 or so bass fishing trips to Mexico, I’ve learned that packing an adequate supply of the right reels can make for a more enjoyable and productive trip. There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for choosing the ones you take, but make sure they’re in tiptop shape and up to the task. Techniques like cranking a 10XD all day will rattle things loose and expose any weak points.
Through my long time in the fishing industry and the sport in general, I’ve had the opportunity to utilize an incredibly wide range of reels. Check out the video below to hear the list of what I’m bringing on our upcoming May/June 2023 trip:

Additional Gear to Consider
The office at Anglers Inn has a decent selection of rod and reel repair tools and accessories, including some guides and lubrication. However, as a “belt and supenders” approach, or if you’re headed on a fishing vacation where there might not be such a well-prepared outfitter, you might consider bringing some of the following:
Notes on Traveling With Fishing Reels
All of the reels listed above come in both left- and right-hand versions.
As a reminder, while we continue to carry on our reels on the way to Mexico, over the past few years the authorities in Mazatlan have effectively required that we check them on the way home. Save space in your checked luggage or risk confiscation.
While bubble wrap, Crown Royal bags and even socks are fine for transporting your reels, there are a wide range of reel covers made for that purpose. Often, when you buy a reel at Tackle Warehouse, one will be included or made available for a discounted price.
Always pack extra line – even for experienced casters, backlashes and tangles seem to come at the wrong time, and I don’t recall anyone ever complaining that their line was too fresh.
